Homework Policy
3rd – 5th Grades
Homework is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Homework is given to reinforce or extend concepts or material presented at school. Most of our students complete their homework accurately and return assignments/projects when due. In an effort to encourage all of our students to take responsibility for successfully completing their homework, the following procedures have been adopted by the staff at Dunlap Grade School. Please review this policy carefully. Then, sign the receipt for this letter, indicating that you have read the rules, and return the receipt to your child’s classroom teacher. The grading scale is as follows:
99-100 A+ 90-91 B+ 82-83 C+ 72-73 D+ 0-65 F

- It is the student’s responsibility to know what his/her assignments are and to complete them by the assigned due date. An assignment book/sheet has been provided to each student for this purpose.
- It is expected that assignments will be turned in at the start of the school day on the due date. Assignments turned in after the start of the school day will be considered late. An assignment grade will be lowered by 10 points if the assignment is not turned in when due. Excuses about lost or forgotten homework will not be acceptable. Students will not be allowed to call home for forgotten homework.
- A “LATE NOTICE” will be sent home whenever a student has failed to complete homework assignments on time. Parents are asked to sign this notice and return it with the completed homework the next day.
- A grade for an assignment that is not turned in on the second day will be recorded as a 65 % (highest failing grade). If necessary, students will miss recess and special subjects in order to complete the homework assignments not turned in on the second day.
- Report card grades will be affected by the failure to complete daily assignments.
- Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher should there be problems completing homework on time.
- In the rare instance that a fifth “LATE NOTICE” is sent home for the same student, the teacher will contact the parents to set up a parent/teacher conference. At this conference an individualized homework plan will be developed.
- Students who are absent will be allowed a reasonable amount of time to complete missed assignments, typically one day per number of days absent. For example, if a student misses three days due to illness, he/she will be granted three days to complete work he/she missed while absent.
